waterDue to heavy downpour of rain on July 25, 2008 that lasted until 3 am the following day, a slope failure (rock topple) occurred at Phase 3 of Abigail Homes in Brgy. Del Carmen, Iligan City. The failure happened on July 26, 2008 at around 2 o’clock in the morning. 1 house located near the slope was severely damaged forcing the occupants, Flauta Family, to evacuate immediately. The perimeter fence of the subdivision was also partially destroyed. slope failure1The event was brought to the attention of MGB-10 by Mr. Allan B. Padilla, Acting Civil Defense Deputized Coordinator of Iligan City Disaster Coordinating Council through the Office of the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council. In response, a technical team from MGB-10 was dispatched on August 2, 2008 to assess the said event.
slope failure2During the assessment, it was found out that the geology of the area chiefly consists of alternating tuffaceous sedimentary rocks including clayey tuff, silty tuff, sandy tuff and tuff shale which are well bedded and fairly friable. A fault was also noted in the area. Prior to the development, these faults were already identified within the area from a geohazard identification survey conducted on December 2003 by this office. Based on the type of rocks and structure present, the area is identified to be at high risk in terms of rock topple/landslide.

A report of the result of the assessment was already submitted to the City of Iligan. The report presented the findings/additional information on the said landslide event including some recommendations for consideration and possible implementation of the concerned entities and agencies.
