Typoon “Frank” Hits Northern Mindanao

Typhoon "Frank" (international codename: Fengshen) entered the Philippines area of responsibility on June 18, 2008. The typhoon triggered several landslides and severe flooding which destroyed dozens of fishing boats, agricultural lands, infrastructures and left many families homeless.

Northern Mindanao specifically Region 10 was also not left without damage. Based on reports from the Office of Civil Defense and Provincial/Municipal/City Disaster Coordinating Councils, big waves or storm surge due to strong winds associated with moderate to heavy rain showers affected most of the coastal communities in the provinces of Camiguin, Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental and Lanao del Norte.

As of June 23, 2008, four (3) casualties were reported namely Ronie Barrera Almodal, Ronilo Badbad Vitorillo, both of Gingoog City while the other two in Lanao del Norte were yet unidentified. A certain Ms. Cheryl Bernaldez of Ozamis City was reported injured. About 191 families or 955 individuals were also evacuated in Lanao del Norte.
In terms of damages, the electric power supply, telephone lines and drainage systems were partially damaged in the province of Camiguin particularly in the municipality of Mambajao. However, these lifelines have already been restored back to normalcy. In the municipality of Balingasag, major roads and bridges were also partially destroyed.
