The Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes in East and Southeast Asia (CCOP) held its 53rd Annual Session in Cebu City on 16-19 October 2017 in Cebu City.  The Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes in East and Southeast Asia (CCOP) is an intergovernmental organization whose mission is to facilitate and coordinate the implementation of applied geoscience programmes in East and Southeast Asia in order to contribute to economic development and the improvement of the quality of life in the region.  CCOP has fourteen member-countries from the region and fourteen cooperating countries worldwide.  CCOP promotes capacity building, technology transfer, exchange of information and institutional linkages for sustainable resource development, management of geo-information, geo-hazard mitigation and protection of the environment.

Raising public awareness on the importance of the application of geoscientific knowledge needs to be relentlessly pursued at the present time in the ASEAN member-countries especially in the Philippines where such issues are in the limelight.  Thus, the CCOP, DENR-MGB, and DOE-ERDB, in cooperation with the DOST-PHIVOLCS, organized the 53rd CCOP Annual Session with theme, “The Role of Geoscience in Safeguarding Our Environment”. The Session provided an opportunity for delegates from CCOP Member-Countries, Cooperating Countries and Organizations to share their knowledge and expertise generated from their geosciences-related country programs.

MGB-X contributed a poster presentation on,  “The Role of Geoscience in Safeguarding Our Environment: The Proposed Bajau Housing in Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines and Disaster Risk Reduction and Management: Saving Lives, Saving Properties, Protecting Investments”.
