The Mines and Geosciences Bureau, Region X took the occasion as host of the weekly flag-raising ceremony and Monday convocation at the DENR-X compound in Cagayan de Oro City on 2018. April 16 to highlight the celebration of Earth Month, with the coming Sunday, 2018. April 22, as Earth Day Celebration.

Chief Geologist Osin Sinsuat, Jr. gave a brief history of Earth Day celebration (from research):

“The first Earth Day on April 22, 1970 is considered to be the birthday of the modern environmental protection movement.

In many communities the Earth Day celebrations are part of Earth Week, an entire week of activities.  In the Philippines, we celebrate Earth Month.

In 1969 peace activist John McConnell proposed to hold a day in honor of the Earth on the day of the spring equinox (around March 21, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere). The United Nations adopted this idea and since 1970 celebrates equinox Earth Day every year on the day of the March equinox with the ringing of the Japanese Peace Bell. At about the same time, US Senator Gaylord Nelson, a Democratic politician famous for his environmental work, proposed to hold a teach-in about environmental issues on April 22, which developed into Earth Day. While initially only held in the United States, the idea was taken global in 1990 by the Earth Day Network, and Earth Day is now celebrated globally every year on April 22.

In the Philippines, Earth Day was launched on April 22, 1990 to mark a global commitment to building a safe, just and sustainable Planet. Then President Corazon C. Aquino inked Proclamation No. 553 on April 16, 1990 in support to Earth Day.

In April 2008, Presidential Proclamation 1481 was signed by then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, declaring April 22 of every year as the “Philippines’ Earth Day” to raise the level of awareness on the gravity of environmental degradation and destruction in the country that threatens the very quality of life of many Filipinos.

Proclamation 1482 issued on April 10, 2008 also declared the month of April as the Philippines’ Earth Month with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources as the main convenor.”

Sinsuat informed the audience that during the Information, Education, Campaign (IEC)  conducted by MGB-X on Geologic Hazards and Disaster Awareness and Preparedness, which is a component of the DENR-MGB National Geohazard Mapping and Assessment Program for local officials including barangay officials, MGB-X included excerpts on Environmental Laws for the awareness and appreciation of local governments.  He noted that Environmental Laws is now part of the conversation.

RD Rex Monsanto shared Earth Day message with the DENR-X family.

The MGB-X “Earthly Angels” delighted the crowd with their dancing prowess.
