Engr. Rodante B. Felina discussing the context of Responsible Mining to the Senior High School students of Lugait National High School

On February 26, 2020, MGB X conducted an IEC on Mining Laws and Responsible Mining to the Senior High School students of Lugait National High School. More than one hundred students participated with the said activity. The presentation was given by Mr. Rodante B. Felina, the chief of Mine Safety, Environment and Social Development Division, about “Responsible Mining Awareness.”

The activity started with an ice breaker where students were more than game as they danced and laughed following the video showed on the screen. After which, Engr. Rodante B. Felina started his presentation.

At the start, the students were still quite skeptical about responsible mining. With the lack of knowledge, and how it is represented by the media, some students raised their concern and firmly showed their stand—being against it. Mr. Felina, however, took it as a good opportunity to show them a more comprehensive idea of what responsible mining is and to also make them understand more on the pros of mining. After the presentation, students were enlightened about the topic as smiles were evident on their faces.

Apart from MGB X, staff from Holcim Resources and Development Corporation (HRDC-Lugait Quarry) attended the activity and was headed by Mr. John Christopher Silvosa, HRDC, and Company Community Relations Manager. Mr. Silvosa presented a short video documentary on HRDC’s Responsible Mining practices specifically on their Corporate Social Responsibility through the implementation of their Social Development and Management Program (SDMP) which gave students a clear picture of their program and even promised them to have a tour in their quarrying site.

To conclude the whole learning engagement, Mrs. Cecilia Tan showed three videos to the students of Lugait National High School. The first video was a short infomercial showing the importance of mining in our everyday lives, entitled “Kutsara.” The second one, which the students enjoyed the most, was the video, Minsan Na Kitang Minahan” that showcased the successful mined-out area rehabilitation of Rio Tuba in Bataraza, Palawan based on a love story. Lastly, a very informative documentary was showed depicting how Responsible Mining alleviate the socio economic status of the Mining community, the Indigenous People and how the youth pursued their dreams of becoming professionals in the future being mining scholars, entitled, “Biyaya ng Lupa.”These videos definitely promoted awareness to the students and imposed better understanding.

The activity ended successfully as the goal was accomplished. It gave more knowledge and awareness to students of Lugait National High School.
