Geologists Brenz Ryan Bautista and Rogin Aron Montalan, and Maria Raniela Orteza, Engineer II, attended the Orientation on Freedom of Information (FOI) Systems in the Department of Environment and Natural Resources held at the Ritz Hotel at Garden Oases, Davao City on 2017. December 21 to 22.  The two-day orientation was conducted in line with the implementation of Executive Order No. 2, Series of 2016 which operationalizes the people’s constitutional right to information in the executive branch.  The activity was participated by resource speakers from DENR-Central Office and the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) along with representatives from the Regional and Field Offices, EMB and MGB Regional Offices of Regions 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13.

DENR Assistant Secretary for Anti-Corruption, Atty. Daniel Darius Nicer, gave a presentation on Freedom of Information (FOI) and the Environment. This was followed by the introduction of the EnvironMentor Android application, a mobile application developed by the DENR that utilizes GPS technology to summon relevant data in the area like geohazard maps, land classification, land cover and others.  This was followed with a presentation and demonstration of the EnvironMentor Web.  This includes the distribution of accounts to the Regional Offices, CENROs, EMB and MGB that will allow the uploading of information to EnvironMentor Web to be integrated in the EnvironMentor smartphone application.

The Geological Society of the Philippines (GSP) held its 2017 Geological Convention (GEOCON) at the Dusit Thani Hotel, Makati City on 2017. December 13-14.   The annual event aims to bring together geologists and other professionals with relation to the field for the purpose of sharing knowledge and ideas. The theme of GEOCON 2017 is Geologists: Partners for Common Good and Social Justice.

The event began with the welcome and opening remarks given by Atty. Fernando S. Penarroyo, the 2017 GSP President.  Atty. Penarroyo introduced the keynote speakers, which included Hon. Allen Jesse C. Mangaoang, Representative of the Lone District of Kalinga;  Undersecretary Atty. Bayani Agabin, Department of Finance; and Mr. Gerard H. Brimo,  Chairman, Chamber of Mines of the Philippines, who talked on The Status of the Mining Industry.

Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio gave the keynote presentation on the West Philippine Sea on 2017. December 14.
