The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council – X held the culmination program for the recent observance of National Disaster Resilience Month and the Gawad KALASAG awarding ceremony at The Mallberry Suites Business Hotel in Cagayan de Oro City on August 10, 2017.  Several local chief executives were present, including Cagayan de Oro City Mayor, Hon. Oscar S. Moreno.

Provincial, city, municipal, and barangay local disaster risk reduction and management officers and representatives of various institutions were on hand to receive their Gawad KALASAG awards from RDRRMC-X officials led by RDRRMC-X Chairperson and Office of Civil Defense-X Regional Director Liza Mazo. PRESIDENT RODRIGO DUTERTE ISSUED EXECUTIVE ORDER NO. 29 ON JUNE 28, 2017 RENAMING THE NATIONAL DISASTER CONSCIOUSNESS MONTH TO NATIONAL DISASTER RESILIENCE MONTH AND SHIFTING ITS FOCUS FROM DISASTER AWARENESS BUILDING TO DISASTER RESILIENCE.

DISASTER RESILIENCE PERTAINS TO THE ABILITY OF INDIVIDUALS, COMMUNITIES, ORGANIZATIONS, AND STATES TO ADAPT TO AND RECOVER FROM THE EFFECTS OF HAZARDS AND DISASTERS THROUGH EFFECTIVE RISK MANAGEMENT.  Continue reading »

MGB-10 Regional Director Rex S. Monsanto delivers his message to the IEC participants and talks on the National Geohazard Mapping and Assessment Program.

After covering 5 provinces, 9 cities, and 84 municipalities, the DENR-Mines and Geosciences Bureau in Northern Mindanao concluded its IEC (Information, Education, Communication) on Geologic Hazards and Disaster Awareness and Preparedness (Disaster Risk Reduction).  The last leg of the IEC activity was  conducted for the municipal and barangay officias of the municipalities of Baungon, Libona, Malitbog, and Manolo Fortich, all of Bukidnon province.

Participants included the punong barangays, barangay disaster risk reduction and management officers (BDRRMOs), and representatives from every barangay from the women’s, senior citizens, PWD, and youth sectors.  Also invited were the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officers, Municipal Government Operations Officers, Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officers, Municipal Planning and Development Coordinators, Municipal Engineers, and Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officers. The IEC activity was held at the Grand Caprice Restaurant and Convention Center, Limketkai Center, Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City on May 30, 2017. Continue reading »

Following the number of earthquakes affecting various parts of the country, including with epicenter in Wao, Lanao del Sur  in Mindanao on April 12, 13, and 16, 2017, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau regional office took the opportunity when it was its turn to host the DENR regional office Monday convocation on April 17, 2017 to conduct an IEC on earthquake and tsunami awareness and preparedness. IEC (Information, Education, Communication) on Geologic Hazards and Disaster Awareness and Preparedness (Disaster Risk Reduction) were conducted for the local government units of Bukidnon province, Malaybalay City, Valencia City, and the municipalities of Cabanglasan, Impasug-ong, Lantapan, San Fernando, and Quezon, all in Bukidnon province.  Participants included the punong barangays, barangay disaster risk reduction and management officers (BDRRMOs), and representatives from every barangay from the women’s, senior citizens, PWD, and youth sectors.  Participants also included the Provincial, City, and Municipal (P/C/M) Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officers, Government Operations Officers, Environment and Natural Resources Officers, Planning and Development Coordinators, Engineers, and Social Welfare and Development Officers, among others. Synopsis: At 4:00 am today, the low pressure area(LPA) was estimated based on all available data at235 km East of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur (9.4N,128.2E).Northeast Monsoon affecting Northern Luzon.

FORECAST:Cloudy skies with moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms which may trigger flashfloods and landslides is expected over Eastern Visayas and CARAGA.Cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and isolated thunderstorms will be experienced over the regions of Bicol, Central Visayas and Northern Mindanao.Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rainswill prevail over Batanes, Cagayan and Ilocos Norte. Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms will be experienced over Metro Manila and the rest of the country.

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over Northern Luzon and the coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the east to northeast with slight to moderate seas. Continue reading »

Geologist Rogin Aron B. Montalan attended the Pre-Disaster Risk Assessment (PDRA) meeting called by the Office of Civil Defense-10 on March 6, 2017. The meeting was presided by OCD-10 Regional Director Liza R. Mazo. DILG-10 Regional Director Arnel Agabe attended the meeting. The agenda of the meeting included the following:

  • PAGASA Weather Update and Forecast by Ms. Ann Fortich relative to the Low Pressure Area affecting parts of Mindanao.
  • Response activities made by the Government Agencies in Cagayan de Oro:
    • Mines and Geosciences Bureau conducted river and creek monitoring on March 6, 2017.
    • Department of Health on Code White.
