Synopsis: At 4:00 am today, the low pressure area(LPA) was estimated based on all available data at235 km East of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur (9.4N,128.2E).Northeast Monsoon affecting Northern Luzon.

FORECAST:Cloudy skies with moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms which may trigger flashfloods and landslides is expected over Eastern Visayas and CARAGA.Cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and isolated thunderstorms will be experienced over the regions of Bicol, Central Visayas and Northern Mindanao.Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rainswill prevail over Batanes, Cagayan and Ilocos Norte. Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms will be experienced over Metro Manila and the rest of the country.

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over Northern Luzon and the coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the east to northeast with slight to moderate seas. Continue reading »

Geologist Rogin Aron B. Montalan attended the Pre-Disaster Risk Assessment (PDRA) meeting called by the Office of Civil Defense-10 on March 6, 2017. The meeting was presided by OCD-10 Regional Director Liza R. Mazo. DILG-10 Regional Director Arnel Agabe attended the meeting. The agenda of the meeting included the following:

  • PAGASA Weather Update and Forecast by Ms. Ann Fortich relative to the Low Pressure Area affecting parts of Mindanao.
  • Response activities made by the Government Agencies in Cagayan de Oro:
    • Mines and Geosciences Bureau conducted river and creek monitoring on March 6, 2017.
    • Department of Health on Code White.

Synopsis:Tail-end of a cold frontaffecting the eastern section of Visayas and Mindanao.Northeast Monsoon affecting Luzon.

FORECAST:Cloudy skies with moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms which may trigger flashfloods and landslides will be experienced over CARAGA and Zamboanga Peninsula.Cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and isolated thunderstorms is expected over Visayas, the rest of Mindanao and the province of Palawan. Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains will prevail over Metro Manila andthe rest of Luzon.

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the Northeast will prevail over Luzon, Visayas and Eastern Mindanao. The coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the Northeast with slight to moderate seas. Continue reading »

Prof. Dina D’ Ayala, the Co-Director of EPICentre, giving the lecture on Global Framework for Safer Schools

Geologist Jenisse Dowell N. Medel attended the Seminar on SCOSSO: An Overview of Multi-Hazard Vulnerability Assessment of Schools (The Case of Cagayan de Oro City).  The seminar was held at Xavier University, Cagayan de Oro City on February 14, 2017.  The seminar consisted of three(3) lectures, showcasing the hazard assessment of schools in Cagayan de Oro City, which was conducted by experts from the University College London (UCL).  Survey results of the SCOSSO (Safer COmmunities through Safer SchOols in the Philippines) Project, which started last August 2016, was also presented during the seminar.

The first lecture was on Global Framework/Program for Safer Schools (GPSS) given by Prof. Dina D’Ayala, the Co-Director of Earthquake and People Interaction Centre (EPICentre) based in UCL. Included in the GPSS is the establishment of a baseline for school safety, as well as the vulnerability assessment of schools in disaster-prone regions of the world. Continue reading »

In line with the national geohazard program, two landslide warning signages were installed in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon on February 10, 2017. The MGB-10 team coordinated with Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon Municipal Councilor and concurrent Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer, Hon. Reynaldo L. Bagayas, Jr. The MDRRMO recommended the area along the highway in Barangay Maluko.  Tension cracks have manifested in the area where an on-going road project is being undertaken by the DPWH.
