Tropical Cyclone: WARNING

“CHEDENG” HAS SLIGHTLY SLOWED DOWN WHILE MAINTAINING ITS STRENGTH.

  • Scattered to at times widespread moderate to heavy rains will prevail over Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Sur, Davao Oriental, Compostela Valley, and Davao del Norte today (18 March) and in most parts of Mindanao tomorrow (19 March). The disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned and residents of these areas, especially those living in areas identified to be at high risk of flooding or landslide, are advised to undertake necessary preparations and continue monitoring for updates.
  • Those with small seacrafts are advised not to venture out over the eastern seaboards of Visayas and Mindanao, as well as the seaboards of areas under Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal (TCWS).
  • This tropical depression may make landfall over the eastern coast of Davao Oriental tomorrow (19 March) morning. Continue reading »

The DENR-Mines and Geosciences Bureau, Lands Geological Survey Division, headed by OIC-Chief, Mr. Antonio Apostol, organized the 2019 Geoscience Workshop on February 18 to 22.  DENR-MGB, Region III hosted this year’s workshop in Clark, Pampanga.

The first day included a presentation on Geopark by Ms. Liza Socorro Manzano, Supervising Science Research Specialist, MGB-Central Office, and on Laboratory Matters by Ms. Jocelyn Villanueva, Senior Science Research Specialist, MGB-Central Office.  The second day opened with a talk on Geodatabase by Ms. Carleen Joy Gatdula, Senior Science Research Specialist, MGB-Central Office.  After this, breakout sessions were held for  the next two days of the workshop and facilitated by the following: Geologic Quadrangle Mapping Workshop by Dr. Maybellin Zepeda, Supervising Geologist, MGB-Central Office; Groundwater Resource Assessment by Mr. Aniano Torres, Supervising Science Research Specialist, MGB-Central Office; Updating 1:10,000 scale Geohazard Maps, on Vulnerability and Risk Assessment, and on Information, Education and Communication by Mr. Salvio Laserna, Supervising Science Research Specialist, MGB-Central Office; Mineral Reservation Program by Mr. Raymundo Villones, Supervising Science Research Specialist, MGB-Central Office; PDRA by Mr. Carl Reiner Padua, Geologist, MGB-Central Office; and Subsidence Hazard Assessment by Ms. Manzano. DENR-MGB-X Chief Geologist Osin Sinsuat, Jr. gave a presentation on the understanding of the rain-induced landslide and flood susceptibility maps during the DENR-X Regional Management Conference held at the DENR-X Conference Room on January 14, 2019.  The participants included regional and field officials led by DENR-X Regional Executive Director Arleigh Adorable

and DENR-MGB-X Regional Director Rex Monsanto.  This was followed by a presentation on the downloading of the 1:10,000 scale rain-induced landslide and flood susceptibility maps by IT Specialist Ramon Hong, Jr.

The PENROs and the CENROs in Region-X have earlier been provided copies of the DENR-MGB-X rain-induced landslide and flood susceptible maps of their respective areas of jurisdiction.

SYNOPSIS: At 3:00 AM today, the Tropical Depression AMANG was estimated based on all available data at 495 km East of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur (7.9°N, 130.8°E)”with maximum sustained winds of  45km/hr near the center and gustiness up to 60 km/hr. It is moving North Northeast at 15km/hr. Northeast Monsoon affecting Luzon.

FORECAST:
CARAGA and provinces of Camiguin will experienced rains with gusty winds due to Tropical Depression “AMANG”. The rest of Mindanao will have cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms due to TD “Amang”. The eastern sec

tions of Mindanao will have strong winds coming from the Northeast with rough seas. Elsewhere, moderate winds from Northeast will prevail with moderate to rough seas.

Region X geologists attended the annual Geological Convention (GEOCON) conducted by the Geological Society of the Philippines (GSP) held at The Manila Hotel on 2018. December 11 to 12.  The annual GEOCON aims to bring together geologists and other professionals with relation to the field for the purpose of presenting current research and ideas.  The convention had for its theme, “Building the Country, Securing the Future: The Role of Filipino Geoscientists”.

DOST Undersecretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr., the GEOCON 2018 chairperson, formally opened the event.

Tropical Cyclone: WARNING

ISSUED AT:2:00 PM, 20 November 2018

TROPICAL DEPRESSION “SAMUEL” CONTINUES TO MOVE CLOSER TOWARDS THE SAMAR-LEYTE-DINAGAT AREA.

  • Moderate to heavy rains which may trigger flooding and landslides is expected over Visayas, Dinagat Islands, Siargao island, Sorsogon, Masbate, Albay, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Romblon, and Cuyo group of islands. Residents of these areas, especially those living near or in river channels, low-lying and mountainous areas, are advised to take precautionary measures, coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices, and continue monitoring for updates.
  • Fisherfolks and those with small seacrafts are advised not to venture out over the areas under TCWS #1 and the eastern seaboard of Southern Luzon.
  • “SAMUEL” is expected to make landfall in the area between the southern portion of Eastern Samar and Dinagat Islands tonight. Continue reading »
