The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council-X held the National Disaster Resilience Month 2018 Culmination Program and Gawad KALASAG Awarding Ceremony at the Grand Caprice Restaurant, Cagayan de Oro City on 2018. July 31.  Cagayan de Oro City Mayor, Hon. Oscar S. Moreno, was the guest of honor.

The Bench marking activity was aimed to get acquainted with best mining practices implemented by the Company and gain insights and appreciation of initiatives on environmental protection and enhancement program, social development and management, MRFC and MMT Operations and other practices/projects like greening/reforestation of mined-out areas being employed by Agata Mining Ventures, Inc. to sustain a responsible mining operation.

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. X joined the Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) on 2018. June 21.  The NSED was organized by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

The drill started at 2 o’clock in the afternoon.  Participants performed the duck, cover and hold right after hearing a 60-second siren.  After the siren, the participants proceeded to the designated evacuation center.

The 2nd quarter NSED has the objective to test the community preparedness efforts, synergize and synchronize efforts towards supporting the effective implementation of both the National and Regional Disaster Response Plan.

Minerals Industry, Inc. (PMDC) converged for a one-day Capability Building on the Evaluation and
Monitoring of Work Programs for Mining Operations.

All too often, technical report writing is loaded with unintelligible jargons, graphs and charts making it incomprehensible to most readers.  Sometimes reports fail to convey its real message either for the lack or overload of words.  Hence, a two-day seminar workshop on Technical Report Writing was conducted last May 24-25, 2018 at the VIP Hotel this city and was participated in by both non-technical and technical personnel of the Regional Office.

The two-day workshop provides learners with the knowledge to make professional writing more direct, informative, and concise for intended audiences.  Salvador C. dela Peña, Ph.D, Chairperson of the Department of Languages, Literature and Performing Arts of Liceo de Cagayan University provided scholarly inputs highlighting grammar correctness. The Provincial, City, and Municipal Governments are hereby advised to take precautionary measures in view of the Low Pressure Area (LPA).  This weather disturbance could have possible adverse impact on the local population, on health, on public and private infrastructure, on the economy.

The Provincial/City/Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils and the general public are advised to be prepared in the event of the occurrence of landslides and floods.  The P/C/MDRRMCs are advised to be vigilant and to take precautionary measures.
The Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Committees (BDRRMCs) are advised to coordinate with their City/Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils to plan for any emergency, including identification of safe and suitable relocation sites and/or evacuation centers.  These should not be located in landslide-/flood-/hazard-prone areas.

In line with the National Geohazard Mapping and Assessment Program of the DENR-MGB, the program continued, this time, in 2015, with the conduct of the Vulnerability and Risk Assessment (VRA).  Two VRAs were conducted in 2015 and twelve in 2016.  In 2018, the results of the assessment conducted in 2015 and 2016 are to presented to the cities/municipalities concerned.

The objective of the VRA is to provide additional technical information to the LGU for a risk-sensitive land use and development as well as disaster risk reduction and management planning.  The assessment takes into account the area’s susceptibility to rain-induced landslide and flooding.  Continue reading »
